I don't have much to add to the other five star reviews, but this is exactly what we wanted breakfast to be today. Warm welcome, good food, and service that was quick and competent. Lots of locals and a large group of "ladies who lunch (breakfast?)" made the place loud but not in an irritating way-just added to the diner ambiance. We started with an order of biscuits and gravy-heaven. Biscuits light and fluffy, and spectacular sausage gravy that wasn't heavy and cement textured that you seem to get at a lot of places. Then the chicken fried steak with hash browns and eggs (did I mention we were hungry?) and yet another biscuit for our bread selection. The chicken fried steak was so tender we didn't need the knife they served with it...and it was covered in more of that delicious gravy. The hash browns weren't my fave and so I'll try the "american potatoes" next time I go. I'm visiting family so won't be able to go very often, but it'll be my first choice for breakfast when I get here!
The locals call it "shiny diner" and it is a gem of a retro experience. I'm from California and this felt like something from a road trip of the past. It isn't a Michelin menu and I doubt they want it to be. It is old school, farm-fresh quality with large portions. There are dozens of things in the menu (as all great diners do), including a classic IL ponyshoe which is essentially all the breakfast stuff piled on top of each other. The crowd is older (as all great diners are). Highly recommend for the local vibe and enough food to fill you up all day.
When in the Mt. Zion area, this is your best bet for the quality of food, service, and price. They treat like family when you walk in the door. Family owned and operated who go above and beyond to please their customers. The majority of the time, I'm a breakfast person, but on occasion, I will have lunch or dinner. Highly recommend for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!
We had takeout taco salads and they were great. Shell was crispy, lettuce was fresh, and topping was plentiful. Great job Four Star Restaurant! You always make food fresh and flavorful.
